Bridges over the Piscataqua River lead to Kittery, a lovely seaport on the Atlantic Ocean. In its earlier years, Kittery was known as a shipbuilding center, giving birth to the Portsmouth Navy Yard in 1806, the first in the nation. The Kittery Historical and Naval Museum plays tribute to the town’s proud seafaring heritage…

…In recent years, Kittery has become a shopping hub for New Englanders and Canadians in search of clothing designer labels and house wares at discounted prices through the Kittery Outlet Center shops, which line both sides of Route 1. Shoreline restaurants, lobster pounds, and antique shops are also a big chunk of Kittery’s commercial landscape.
With the exception of Odiorne Point in Rye, Fort Foster is the region’s largest and most scenic and diverse area to wander. The hulking WWII-era military structures enhance the dramatic views of the Piscataqua River and its rocky shore. Throughout the seasons, the 88-acre park is filled with a mix of children on swings, dog walkers, hikers, naturalists, beach enthusiasts, scuba divers, cross-country skiers, snow shoers, etc.
With a series of restorations over the years, Fort McClary remains a popular historical tourist attraction. It was used for nearly 275 years to guard against approaches to the Piscataqua River.
A trip to Southern Maine just isn’t complete without a visit to Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier, a large deck perched on the bank above Chauncey Creek offering brightly painted picnic tables, an enclosed area for inclement weather, and a postcard-perfect view across the water to the pines and back down toward Pepperrell Cove, sails and spires gleaming in the sun. Picnic baskets and coolers are definitely part of the scene as guests are welcome to bring any food from home that is not offered on the menu, including beer or a bottle of your favorite wine.
